What is a Protection Visa?

A Protection Visa (subclass 866) allows eligible people in Australia to remain permanently if they engage Australia’s protection obligations as a refugee or through complementary protection grounds. Successful applicants can:

  • Live, work, and study in Australia

  • Access Medicare and Centrelink services

  • Sponsor family members through the offshore humanitarian program

  • Apply for Australian citizenship (when eligible)

Who is Eligible?

To be granted a Protection Visa, you must:

  • Be in Australia when applying

  • Meet the definition of a refugee or be owed complementary protection under international law

  • Pass health, character, and security checks

  • Not be barred from lodging a protection application (such as some unauthorised maritime arrivals)

You may qualify if you are in Australia and fear serious harm due to your race, religion, political opinion, nationality, or membership of a particular social group. You must also meet Australia’s legal definition of a refugee or be eligible for complementary protection.
